An amazing football pitch.
This was created by the local prisoners a long time ago, it is
set into an old disused quarry.
Many a school holiday spent here having a game with friends.
It can get very hot down there in the summer, a real suntrap.
At the top you see some steps leading down, I can only
imagine what it felt like walking down there when it was full
of spectators.
It has been said the actual pitch is only slightly smaller
than the old Wembley!
Around this side there are banks of grass steps, where
people would sit and watch.
It is rarley used nowadays and thats a shame.
It is not an easy place to find when visiting the island.
I feel like a gladiator when I go down here. :o)
I too love this place, its such a shame its not utilised in any way. It would be a fab place to hold a mini festival!!!! Alas its still owned by the crown and such an event would only be caught up in red tape, never to be heard of again.
ReplyDeleteIts a shame most of our children would rather be in hooked up to computer games than getting out and exploring this AMAZING island an its magical features, Tout, The Bill (it is after all so much more than a lighthouse!!)and the afore mentioned Ghost Tunnels. Portland is a great place to grow up, relatively safe by today's standards, perhaps I look at the past through rose tinted specs but I think we had more fun and better friendships then didn't we??????

ReplyDeleteIt is a great place to grow up, although it has also recently changed a fair bit but like you say, by today's standards it is good.

I think to enjoy Portland and what it has to offer you need to love the great outdoors. Some great places to discover and enjoy :o)
ReplyDeleteI think most of my family played a game or two down there, including Sam, Graeme's son. It was an extremely cold day with teeming rain. We had a flask of coffee to keep us warm!! Andy refereed matches down there also, I always liken it to a witches cauldron. As you say one of many places to visit on the Island, what a shame more places are not promoted in the Weymouth & Portland Holiday brochures - perhaps the Tourism Office needs a push in the right direction!
