Portland stone

The two original trades of Portland.

Stonecraving and fishing, I will get the other side of this statue up asap so you have a nice clear picture of the work gone into this.
A great piece of work.

As a mason myself I can appreciate the work that has gone into this.

The masonry trade is still an active trade here, but not as it used to be just as with the fishing trade.
The fishing trade has been declining at a far faster rate than the stone industry.

There are few fishermen here in my view.

Though it is great to see one of my relatives who has his yard to the rear of my home, going about has daily fishing.
I can imagine what it must have been like 100 years ago, with lots of men going about their day just as my "fishing uncle" does.

Incidently he also won a show on tv not long ago.. :o)

Thisis a wonderful tribute to the Island two main industries, I love this statue, not just for it's appreciation of the Island but also from a personal point of view, Jamie was proud of his job as a stonemason. We know 'Squeaker' reasonably well, in fact we have a video from years ago when he and Julie were married and guess who is on that video - yes YOU Rob.We watched him win the Weakest Link also - all good for this wonderful Island of ours. x

  2. I agree it is a nice tribute and well carved too. :o) (wish I did it) and me and Jamie had good times in the masonry work.

No surprise to hear I am in that video, seeing Steve (squeaker) is married to dads sister.
Won't be putting that online will you!!! :P

I watched him on that weakest link, good he won it.

No, don't panic Rob. The video is very old and doesn't copy too well now, it's been played dozens of times. We used to record all the programmes on Portland and have quite a few on there. Every so often, we play it again and enjoy a couple of hours.
