Underhill

The area which faces you as you approach the Island is shown here known as underhill, as apposed to tophill...which as the name suggest is the top part of the island.
When you come to Portland and want to go somewhere on the Island you will have to drive through underhill to get there as there is a one way system at the bottom of the Island.
Driving up "new road" which is that angled part behind the main housing area and in front of the trees, *(you can see the bend of the road at the top in fact), you will get to see that stunning view overlooking the beach as can be seen elsewhere on this blog.
Those who live in underhill have that view to wake up to, they watch the sunset from their front rooms.
Many years ago those in underhill were at loggerheads with those who lived "up top" as we say here, this was the way for a long time and these two communities didn't really mix at all.
Fishermen "down under" as we say here, and "stonemasons up top."
The two main trades of Portland back then.
Still even now many of us feel we are either from underhill or tophill, when on Portland, when elsewhere we all say we are from Portland.
