Portland is a washout, much like the rest of the UK

Portland like most of the UK recently sems to be a washout with the terrible weather we have all had but it does make for some interesting skies with the clouds looking moody and dark.

We are fortunate to not have the same issues as Cumbria has had, being surrounded by water must be a nightmare at times, we are lucky to be a lump of rock sticking up even though we are also surrounded by water.

Several weeks ago as seen in recent storm pictures on here was as bad as we have had it, after that weekend this current wind driven rain is tame in comparison.

Does show that the sea wall barrier we have here is doing it's job and well.

The fact is, lessons were learnt and then the problem was dealt with, why does this not happen everywhere, I would bet that this is not the first time those villages in Cumbria have been flooded, much like elsewhere has suffered badly at times, indeed we saw a similar thing in Cornwall a few years ago when flash floods ruined Boscastle.

While it's true we all know the risk of living where we do, we should be minimizing the risk of it happening over and over again.

I do hope that those suffering in Cumbria have a speedy "back to normal" recovery but also hope measures will be taken to improve things where this sort of thing happens.

Although stormy weather is great in some ways, leaving us in awe quite often, yet they are devastating when they chose to be.

I have every sympathy for the people of Cockermouth just as I had for those of Boscastle. However, I do feel sure that they will enter into the communal spirit of things and will help each other. They will get to know and appreciate each other better and this can not be a bad thing as lasting friendships will be formed through this disaster. It is going to be a pretty miserable Christmas season for them all, but as I say they will rally around and make the best of a disastrous event. As you say Rob, we are lucky to be surrounded by water but not in the same vein as those unfortunate people. May they return to normal as quickly as possible.

  2. I agree Sylv,

I think like Boscastle it will strengthen the community itself, just a shame to be so vulnerable to this sort of problem, lucky for those who are never in that sort of position.

Seems hard to believe that there are places built which are lower then the water table out there...crazy in a sense.

But yeah I do hope that this is the one and only time they suffer this up there.

Whenit came over in the late 7o's our Cliff School main hall doubled up as a refuge for the poor folk in Chiswell. I feel ashamed really as I was only 10, I was as happy as a sand lord that our school was closed for a few days. I did not stop to think about my fellow portlanders all washed out. Sorry folks, Andy Straw
