Portland, first impressions last

Very weathered stone! :o(
When coming to Portland you see the two big columns sat on the patch of grass before the main roundabout, this patch of grass is where the fairground was last week.

The columns were put up a few years ago as a memorial, a "gateway" too.

Having got a close look at them I have to say...

The stone at the bottom of these columns is very weathered, to the point the writing is unreadable, quite surprised at that seeing that, considering the fact they are not old.

On the other side of this is a plaque fitted which is ok, so not sure if the stone was already worn, reused or what?

Maybe one of you eagled eyed readers will know better than me?

Standing here and looking the way this picture faces, everything is looking good, pleasing to the eye, with the way the industrial part of the port have been revamped, turn around though and you have the eyesore of Vic'y sq, the run down buildings, the old lodge (now called mason's and mariners) and the local skip hire business do not make a nice sight for the first impression people have when visiting Portland.

It really does need sorting out down here, this place will be in the eyes of the world in 2012 when shown on TV coverage.

In a way, it's just as well people carry on going after seeing this square.
