Overlooking Chesil Beach :o) |
Not sure if that's a good move in some ways, nice when you are walking but for drivers, seeing cars coming round corners before it happens, due to the headlights, is not happening mainly because they don't distinguish from the new street lamps.
Whereas the old orange ones certainly did and you knew a car was coming everytime and they knew you were coming.
Wonder what the "stargazers" think too, considering the impact on light pollution, has that got worse, better?
Portland's old lamps, scattered everywhere
There is this huge thing as seen in the picture below sat at the bottom of Fortuneswell.

This wasn't working when I looked and don't think it is used anymore but can't be certain, must check that ;o)
No idea if they ever plan to replace this with one of the newer ones similar to those in Victoria Sq, as mentioned below...
There are a couple of these newer ones down in Victoria Square, huge like this one here, which would be the small building patch you see at the middle bottom of the picture, sitting at the very bottom of Portland.
If we stop and look around we can find lot's of these old lampost scattered about the Island, hopefully they stay up too and many of them in harmless places like the side streets, in alleys, which are all over the island, as seen in the next picture.
In the back streets! |
They certainly don't make lamps elaborate like they once did, plain and simple now, shame as it is part of the "furniture" so to speak.
Our parents bought one of the old style lamps and it sit's in the back garden of the now sold house in Reforne. Not a working one though.
Should you have the opportunity to save one of these, you should. ;o)
I do hope that these remaining ones that scatter the island can be kept maintained.
