Portland's St Georges centre, St Georges day

St Georges day is soon upon us, 23rd April, a day England rarely celebrates as it should do... shame on us for that, this is something England should have embraced more not less over the years, look at the very widespread St Patrick day celebrations, we in England even celebrate it more then St Georges day!

A day where there should be an abundance of our white flags with the red cross in the streets, not stopped by the council...

As we have this aptly named St Georges centre here on Portland I think with it's space out the front and proximity to all of the Island, being fairly central, it would make a great place to have a St Georges party on a good scale. A day which should rightly be a holiday so that kids would have that chance to celebrate it, and what kid doesn't remember a holiday date. :o)

Even have a show where the kids from different primary schools have a chance to act out the story.
Games too, which gives all the younger kids from each school a chance to know each other.

The fact it is also Shakespeare's birthday that day makes it another good reason to celebrate being English, honouring two of England's greatest known people on the same day.

St Georges day will be a forgotten day unless we start to celebrate it for what it is, a day to say, I am English.

Don't you agree?
