Portland from Wyke

Portland from Wyke, overlooking all saints school.

From this position it's not so easy to see Portland as an Island which is in one sense good for us on Portland as it mean less holiday makers come to the Island, not that we don't want them...but you go to Weymouth town centre on a hot summers day and you see what we mean!

It leads to quiet and enjoyable summers for those of us who live on Portland. :o)

If there is group of  holidaymakers that does know about Portland and takes the time to visit...it's the surfers, windsurfers and kiteboarders. You will always see these in the water at Portland harbour where the sailing will be held in 2012...it is NOT Weymouth at all. The media and marketing people are quite misleading to the general public about that I feel.

There are a few places where you can get a great view of Portland as a whole, this being one of them, hardy's monument near Dorchester is another, neither of these are quite the same as from "swyre hill" on the coast road towards Bridport. That is a view to enjoy. It's so nice that there is a stopping point for cars so people can view Portland and often photograph it too.
