Sad to see the end of the Bath & Portland stone firms, by that I mean the actual building is down, it's where I did my own apprenticeship...some good times where had in there.
I think when we were there back in the late 80's early 90's before the ERM "black weds" happened, (which as we know was the start of that last recession) was the last good great time this place had, from there it's all gone pear shaped sadly.
The once proud stone industry on Portland is never going to be like that again, in my opinion.
This stone firm was a big place, with another half also in Bath as the name implies.
A lot of the older masons had spent most of their working lives here, I bet many are sad to see this too.
Now a Tesco is being built there, along with some homes as far as I know. What a sad state of affairs.
A dying dead trade. Killed off further by this and the fact our precious stone is being wasted "slabbed" away at a fast rate and not used in better quality, higher value work....it's scare stone, once gone it's gone!
