Happy new year Portland and what may 2010 bring?

2009 was a bit of a mixed year for Portland, we lost something big with the closure of the stone firms main building, we battled against the cliff quarry issues, another big part of Portland we could lose if we are not careful, we saw the marina area revamped and hotels sorted out which all look good.

Sadly for the people it's mainly on the side of rubbish for the majority in my opinion, even worse for some among us several friends and obviously family members for some left us in 2009, sad indeed but always to be remembered. RIP you guys.

2010 brings a a small relief for some while giving many hope for an improvement over the year and indeed the decade.

What can we hope for over 2010 here on The Isle of Portland?

Something that matters!

Taking a holistic look at the island some thing I would like to see happen over 2010 is...

The language, by that I mean the old language of Portland, it IS disappearing fast with the oldest Portlanders nearing the end stages of life, as happens, nevertheless what IS being done to preserve save this old unique dialect?

What can we do about that?

Do you have relatives or family friends who now any of this old dialect?
Can you ask them about it and record words and meanings?

I think this is the most important thing we should all be considering here on Portland, it's OURS to save and time is running out. Can we collectively save it for the record?

Do you have any suggestions on what we can do about this?

I am hoping you have a great 2010, all the luck, wealth, health and happiness you deserve.

Rob :o)

Hi Rob, Sadly most of my ye olde Portlander Reletives have now passed on, however, I have picked up a little bit as I was born here also. but it pretty much consists of Tis' and Twas' and the like. But I agree, tis' something we should treasure and preserve. Andy

Might be worth contacting Free Portland News Rob, they may have some information from old issues. If I can think on I'll have a look in RT Cards in Easton, they sell lots of books on old Portland bits and pieces. It would be lovely to hear some of the old language instead of some of the disgusting foul language that just seems to drop out of the mouths of some of the prettiest young ladies on the island. Slowly, it looks as though the old Portland is disappearing, I know it's called progress but am not a great lover of some of the things that are happening to this lovely island. Hope some of it is salvaged and kept for posterity. Sylv

  3. Hi Andy, Sylv,

I agree tis a shame to lose it.

I do know "durna" is "don't have a" which gives us an indication is was alot of shortened phrases, IE we were lazy buggers way back :o)

Another family to maybe ask would be Stuart Morris's, no doubt there are some gems still there to save.

    Rob
