Portland has had it's fair share of flooding problems over the years, thankfully we have, with the sea defence wall, held it better over the last 20 odd years, the sea still has the power to flood here make no mistake of that, this winter reminded us with Chesil beach being battered by storms.
Nothing quite like it was as seen above though I have to say. Couldn't have been very nice working at the old naval base back in those days when it got like this. In that picture you can't even see the famous pebble beach running alongside the sea.
For those who are not local, in the picture above, just to the right is the road I live in (right where it looks like a gap in the homes)... it looks like a stream pointing out towards the main Square and Oil Tanks.
And right below in this picture is that road, road under water that is!
That is right outside the window I look out of here while typing this post!
This picture below is the same spot facing the opposite way, towards the entrance to walk along the sea wall, elsewhere on this blog, I showed a picture of the old fishing cottage, which at the top of the road, you can see the small white garage, well it's on the right side of that.
Free Portland news has a huge amount of fantastic photos, from which these are shared with you, putting our local history in the eyes of more people is always a good thing, importantly the younger generations locally can see just much Portland has changed, and what from.
Some great pictures and sad memories to many, floods cause such devastation and having seen it several times myself I often said, I'd never live in Chiswell, not keen on getting flooded, and here I am living there!
Until we came to live on Portland, I had never seen sights like this, it really shook me. Makes you realise the power of the sea and how we should all respect it. I remember it all vividly and my family up in the north-east all commented on it when they saw it on national tv news - wondered if we'd be okay. Living on Tophill, if we were not okay, God help the rest of the Island.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine Sylv.
ReplyDeleteLoved your last line... if you were ok god help the rest of us lol... how true, if waves got up there we would all be doomed. :P
