Portland's Cove Inn as seen in early 20th century

Chesil beach's Cove Inn as seen in the very early part of last century, a staggering picture when you compare it to the modern one... for one thing the Cove Inn is 1/3rd of the height now as it was then, this due to the sea wall being built.

The bottom 3rd is still in use as the pubs loo's are down there, you can see the more modern look below...

The view on the far side of the first picture reveals not alot has changed... and as you can see, the Cove Inn has hardly changed at all except to lose the bottom 3rd for the wall which was needed.

Having seen the waves hit the pub itself with the wall there, I can't imagine what it was like way back then with nothing but pebbles there. The picture below does have the sea wall, I am guessing this picture is late 70's at the latest.

Quite a stormy sight that is, the waves much like those that hit this year as seen in an earlier post on this blog.

I was amazed to see such good pictures shared kindly and all credit for these to out local monthly "Free Portland News" who have now started a facebook fan page, from which I got these pictures, be sure to visit their page to see these amazing old photos of a bygone era.

They really are superb and wonderful pictures to see. The views from the top of the Island are still as spectacular as ever and the sunsets are fantastic during the summer months in particular. There is nothing better than taking a stroll along the cove on a sunny afternoon, winter, spring, summer or autumn with the sound of the sea sometimes gently lapping, sometimes roughly slapping, on the pebbles of our world-famous Chesil beach.
