Portland UK : Ammonite island?

Ammonites are a common sight on Portland.

Have a look around the Island and you will find dozens of these in walls etc, even on walls of houses as a feature. Most are not much bigger than this one you see although I know they were originally most likely about a metre and half wide.

Sections break off, it's the middle that survives best and what you see most of the time. As a mason you see the other parts of these in stone, bit of a pain in the neck when you are trying to "work it" I have to say.

Hard to believe that fossils only stared being noticed in Victorian times seeing how old they are.
I wonder what people made of them before then, I can only imagine people would be stumbling across something like this and thinking, "now that IS a weird stone."

It's not hard to see why people like to make a feature of these in the walls of their home or garden.
