Atmospheric yet beautiful sunset on the beach

Beautiful sunsets on the beach!
Beautiful sunsets on the beach here at Portland.

During the recent atmospheric dust fallout from the volcano we did have some pretty strange yet stunning sunsets like this one here on Chesil beach.
A shade of colour I have rarely seen.

This was taken from the old Police station above the park on the night of the Portland spring fair.
The sky was completely clear of clouds.

You can see the scale of this if you notice the couple talking a stroll along the pebbles to the left of the sun ray on the sea.

Portland's sunset on the beach

Sunsets on the beach....

What can possibly beat that for an amazing sight of natural wonder?

Here on Portland we are lucky to be able to enjoy the sunset on the beach, almost daily.

Sitting on Chesil beach watching the sun setting, on Chesil beach, fantastic.

Portland Bill bathed in Easter sunshine

Portland Bill has been bathed in beautiful sunlight this Easter weekend, not as warm as it looks but at least warm enough to get out there and enjoy it, the sunset on Chesil beach as ever, looking great.

Many people have been out and about walking around the Island, enjoying a drink on the sea wall watching the sun go down.

The start of summer is here at last, a good time to check out Portland Bill's accommodation choices for that getaway break to enjoy this unique place, take a walk around the Island, do some fishing, abseiling, or the other way with some rock climbing, canoeing, diving, surfing, sailing, whatever you enjoy there is something here for you to try out, more so if you have yet to try it.

Plenty of relaxing places to enjoy a drink, meal if action isn't your thing.

Happy Easter to all my readers, wherever you are. :o)

Portland's Chesil beach sunsets getting better...spring is near

March is here already, Portland can look forward to some more amazing sunsets, not that we don't get them in winter but they do seem to step up in beauty in the warmer longer days.

Not so long till the clocks go forward again drawing the days out into early evening time, the time Portland's Chesil beach cove really comes alive with locals enjoying the view and what's not to enjoy!

Red October on Portlands chesil beach

Fantastic weather and sunsets for October here on Portland, long may it continue, after a great September too.

The consistency has been great with only a couple of bad days in the last 6 or 7 weeks.
Chesil beach is never empty at the moment with people taking advantage of the sun. Plenty of groups on canoes out there recently, plenty of people fishing too.

Admittedly the nights have got colder, and it's not long till the clocks go back again so we lose the later sunsets and the brighter mornings start, the real end of the summer.

For now everyone is enjoying the weather and making the most of it, as the one truth with British weather is as we know...it won't last!

Sunrays over Portlands chesil beach

Portland's fantastic Autumn sunsets on Chesil beach never cease to take my breath away, with skies like this how can you fail to feel a little inspired?

While the days are getting shorter and the nights start to cool down, it's still warm and summer like at the moment, it's a bit of an Indian summer feel for me.

Today there seemed to be a lot of little flies and gnats about, it was humid today.

I have noticed there has been a lot more divers on Chesil beach in the last couple of weeks, the water has been warming up all summer so i can imagine it must be fairly nice in there at the moment.

Also the people fishing, day and night it seems to be increasing, the "string of lights" along the beach at night looks to be a good few miles long.

I enjoy this time of the year, it's past the summer but not quite really Autumn, the trees are going brown but the leaves are not yet falling, the sun's warmth still there too, the nights have yet to get crisp and chilly.

Autumn, a great time of the year and hopefully we will have a long warm spell before it really changes.

Sunsets over Portland's "mere farm"

Overlooking the Fleet and Portland harbour, the scene of the 2012 Olympic sailing, taken from the top of what is known as "the incline"...a steep path from the bottom directly toward the top, or top directly to the bottom.

Originally used with boxes on rails for transporting goods from the top directly down toward the water to be transported on boats.

As I sat up here I thought about the many generations of Portlanders who had also sat here in wonder at the sunsets we have over Chesil beach.

The foreground was known as the "mere farm" and has now as you can see been reclaimed and built on by the navy who are no longer here.

I don't myself have any photos of this scene before the navy changed the mere farm from what it was to the solid ground it is now.

The one thing that doesn't and won't change are the stunning sunsets we enjoy here.

Autumn sunsets on chesil beach

It's that time of the year again, beautiful sunsets on Portland's Chesil beach.

It's pretty amazing to see how the atmosphere changes the colour of the sky at different times of the year.
So many beautiful subtle shades of various colours.

A great time of the year to enjoy the sunsets.

Chesil beach under colourful clouds

Portland has been having great weather like elsewhere in the UK, giving us some great sunsets on Chesil beach too.
Good to see the summer finally here, for a change as it's been a few years since we had a good stretch of sun rather then a day or two here and there.

Chesil beach is seeing plenty of fishing too with people lining the beach for miles along the pebbles.
I am enjoying the skies more than anything, not very hard to see why!

Portland UK : Beautiful sunshine on chesil beach

It has been a great week or two of weather, the bonus being it was half term last week so the kids all had something to be happy about and not cooped up indoors.

Chesil beach has been getting unusually busy recently and I think part of that can be attributed to the new cafe on the sea wall. People are stopping for a cup of tea and cake, rather than just walking along and then leaving.

Seen a fair few canoes and divers too, making the most of the great weather, long may it continue.

Portland UK : Sunset on Chesil beach

Something about this picture looks a little surreal, almost as if the dark is closing on the sun rather than the sun setting down. Even in the bottom of the picture it looks as if the dark is creeping that way.

The clouds just reinforce the look for me.

Portland UK : Easter on Chesil beach

Portland has been fortunate to have had some great weather over the Easter holidays.
Plenty of people out and about enjoying the sun, you can see several people enjoying a drink outside the Cove Inn while watching the sun go down ... one of the best things to do here on days like this.

Off to the right of these people were about fifty more people sat outside the pub, a sure sign here that summer has arrived.

A great place to bring the family, the kids have plenty of room to run around and burn off that endless energy they seem to have, you can relax due to the fact it's safe enough to easily keep your eyes on them.

Luckily I live just behind this pub, so I can get to see the sunset as often as it sets.

Portland UK: More spring sunsets on chesil beach

Seems that the sunsets lately are getting better and better giving us some fantastic light here and it's ever changing as the sun goes down.
The temperature does drop soon after the sun sets what with the clear skies the good weather has brought us it means any warmth soon rises leaving the chill.

I loved the way the light and clouds distorted the sun here, as you can see on the enlarged picture if you click on it.

I never seem to run out of great sunsets to capture for you.

Portland UK : Chesil beach sunset

Portlands Chesil beach and the fantastic sunsets we have here never cease to amaze me.
These I took just the other night while I was having a walk along the sea wall.

It is no wonder that many Artists relocate to the south west with the great range of light here like you see in the picture, I turned 90 degrees and took one of the beach looking along it as you can see below...

Hard to not want to capture sights like these, yet any night you come here the sunset and sky is always diferent making the light also different, meaning you will never bore of taking the pictures.

What a great little place don't you think?

Portland UK

Portland...there are a few in the world, but this blog is centred around the original "Portland", that is Portland UK, the most southern point of Dorset (county). Why do I even mention this?

chesil beach portland uk

I was looking at where the people who read this blog where from, what part of the world etc, using the stats which I only check once in a while on here and found there were people who lived in the "other" Portland's of the world who were reading this too.

Interesting yet most welcome. :o)

We are fortunate to be living here on Portland in the UK with the sea all around and some stunning views.

But a big hello to all "other" Portlanders too.

"Sunset via fortuneswell below a moody sky"

I really was in awe of this when I turned around as I walked through fortuneswell.
The clouds looked like they wanted to drop out of the sky while the sun looked as if it wanted to hide!

A few moments later it got a little darker, moodier...I steadied myself ready to click...then the damn camera batteries ran out!! :o/

*sigh!

"Fantastic skies when it's chilly"

Not sure why, but this time of the year we get some amazing skies here. While it is chilly it seems to alot clearer out there.

I keep catching some good pics while looking out of the window, or as it often happens, while I am doing the washing up after making tea. :o)

It's the range of colours they amaze me mostly, never really the same twice.

How can I not like washing up!! :o)
