If it is a drain that is, my imagination run away with me at the time because it didn't really look like a drain, more an entrance for something than anything. We all know on Portland that's possible ;o)
Portland's hidden secrets fascinate me...
The problem is they are hidden!
Portland's chequered history
The history of the Island is interesting as it has been involved in so many things, the D-Day landings
, the secrecy that use to prevail on Portland is odd, at one time we had the Royal Navy here, the A.U.W.E I think it was called, out Southwell where the business park is now, it was where alot of Portland people worked and yet no-one knew what they did, several members of my family worked there, no idea what they did though, because it was all connected to the forces. Even now in the loo's out there are little stickers on the walls, with "keep our secrets secret".. idle gossip cost lives... with an image of a spy hiding behind a toilet door, that sort of thing, all cloak and dagger stuff!
It still feels odd getting used to the fact I am allowed in these areas now, nothing here is having to be kept secret like it was.
Yet as a kid growing up we hear of tunnels all over the Island, secrets paths that lead from one base to another, is it true? No idea, but it sure fires up your imagination as a child, hard to forget what we imagined too.

and the like use all this sort of thing here one time? Mermaids

It certainly fires up the fact Portland was a big playground as a child, with the imagination running riot like that it made it even more so.
Having seen several underground bunkers and more on the Island I find it all hard to dismiss.
Maybe I just won't grow up! :o)
